Do not reach for the quotient rule. Split the fraction first and write everything as a power of x: f(x) = 12x3x−1/2 − 2x x−1/2 = 12x5/2 − 2x1/2. Differentiating, f'(x) = 54x3/2 − x−1/2. At x = 4 this is 54× 8 − 12 = 10 − 0.5 = 9.5.
